Thailand will host the United Nations Conference on the Protection of Persons in the Event of Disasters in Bangkok from 25 January to 12 February 2027, after the UN General Assembly adopted a decision by consensus to accept its offer.

Introducing the draft decision to the General Assembly, H.E. Ambassador Cherdchai Chaivaivid, Permanent Representative of Thailand to the UN, said the Conference carries special meaning for a country that lived through the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

In Bangkok, States will negotiate a new international Convention to protect people affected by disasters, which are growing more frequent, complex, and severe, often overwhelming national capacities and causing humanitarian consequences that cross borders. The Convention seeks to establish a global legal framework that strengthens protection for disaster-affected persons while respecting State sovereignty, covering the full disaster cycle: risk reduction, preparedness, emergency response, and humanitarian assistance.

Thailand looks forward to welcoming delegations from around the world to Bangkok and contributing to the conclusion of a Convention that can save lives.
