On 28 September 2026 at the 81st Session of the UNGA General Debate, Ambassador Cherdchai Chaivaivid exercised Thailand’s Right of Reply to set the record straight and outline the path forward for bilateral relations.
• Clarification on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs): The referenced "IDPs" are Cambodians residing in areas originally opened as temporary shelters in the 1970s, whose failure to return constitutes an encroachment on Thai territory.
• Commitment to Peace & Diplomacy: Dialogue and diplomacy remain Thailand’s first choice. Thailand remains fully committed to the ceasefire in consistent with the Joint Statement of 27 December 2025.
• Constructive Engagement: While Thailand preferred direct bilateral dialogue on maritime boundaries, Cambodia pursued compulsory conciliation. Thailand nevertheless continues to engage constructively in the process as a confidence-building measure.
• Call for Genuine Sincerity: Moving forward requires Cambodia’s demonstrating goodwill in international forums, refraining from border provocations, and advancing concrete cooperation—specifically in humanitarian demining and combating cross-border crime, including online scams.
