On 31 August 2026, H.E. Mrs. Pawaree Xuto CHAIPATIYUT, Ambassador, Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, delivered Thailand’s national statement at the High-Level Meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day against Nuclear Tests at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Thailand reaffirmed its commitment to ending nuclear testing and achieving a world free of nuclear weapons.

Thailand highlighted three key priorities: (1) advancing the universalization and early entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), calling on the remaining Annex II States to sign and/or ratify the Treaty and on nuclear-weapon States to exercise utmost restraint and maintain their testing moratoria; (2) strengthening the global nuclear disarmament framework, underscoring that the CTBT, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), and regional nuclear-weapon-free-zone treaties, including the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ) or the Bangkok Treaty, are mutually reinforcing instruments; and (3) demonstrating concrete technical leadership, including through Thailand’s two International Monitoring System (IMS) stations and its preparation to host Southeast Asia’s first radionuclide noble gas detection facility once the upgrade is completed.

Thailand also underscored its close cooperation with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) in strengthening technical capacity across the region. The visit of Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the CTBTO, to Thailand in July 2026 further deepened this cooperation and reaffirmed the shared commitment to advancing regional technical capabilities.
