June 26, 2025 – New York. H.E. Mr. Vathayudh Vichankaiyakij, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Thailand to the UN, delivered a statement at the UN Security Council Open Debate on Children and Armed Conflict, highlighting the disproportionate impact of armed conflict on children and reaffirming Thailand’s commitment to resolve the issue.
Expressing deep concern, he highlighted the severe risks children face – including sexual violence, killing and maiming from armed deployments and explosive ordnance in populated areas. “Homes, schools, and playgrounds have become danger zones … This severely undermines children’s safety, well-being, and overall development,” he stated.
Thailand endorsed of the Political Declaration on Strengthening the Protection of Civilians from the Humanitarian Consequences Arising from the Use of Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas in January 2025. The Deputy Permanent Representative called for strengthening the protection of civilians and children from the indiscriminate use of explosive weapons, humanitarian assistance, and awareness raising on explosive ordnance to reduce risks and prevent future cases.
The statement also addressed the rising threat of sexual violence against children in conflict zones. He urged the international community to take immediate action to end such violations of International Human Rights Law and International Humanitarian Law as well as ensure greater accountability. Preventive and response mechanisms must be enhanced. Thailand recognises the invaluable role that female personnel play in conflict zones. “Female peacekeepers and UN officers in armed conflict are essential for promoting safety, security and trust in conflict-affected communities, particularly among women and girls,” added the Deputy Permanent Representative.
The annual UNSC open debate reviews progress on protecting children in armed conflict and strengthens global commitments to this critical issue.
