On 24 July 2025, Ambassador Cherdchai Chaivaivid, Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations in New York, met with H.E. Mr. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations. Ambassador Cherdchai submitted to Secretary-General Guterres a letter requesting clarification regarding Cambodia's use of anti-personnel mines, which resulted in Thai army personnel stepping on landmines, causing severe injuries within Thailand's territory on 16 and 23 July 2025. Such an act is a clear violation of the obligations under the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.
The Royal Thai Government has confirmed that the landmines were a type of anti-personnel mine not employed or stockpiled by the Kingdom of Thailand, and that they were also recently laid. Assessments and related evidence point to the conclusion that the laying of these mines was a clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Thailand and a blatant violation of international laws stated in the UN Charter.
