On 20 May 2024, the Permanent Mission of Thailand to the United Nations and the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations co-hosted the commemoration of the International Day of Vesak at the ECOSOC Chamber, UN Headquarter.

H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, emphasized, through a video message, the key teachings of Lord Buddha. He also underscored that Lord Buddha’s teaching of peace, tolerance, compassion, humility, and mutual respect, align with the purposes and principles of the United Nations.

In his closing remarks, H.E. Dr. Suriya Chindawongse, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations, highlighted that, as the world is currently facing multiple challenges, Lord Buddha’s teaching can be adapted to the work of the United Nations. These principles included (1) the Four Sublime State, which can guide us through our daily lives and inter-state relations; (2) the ‘Middle Path’, which complements the practice of sustainable development; and (3) the realization that changes are natural phenomenon, and prepare for the future by adopting holistic, balanced, and compassionate approaches to build a better future under the framework of the United Nations.

The commemoration also featured video messages from H.E. Mr. Ali Sabry, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, H.E. Mr. António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, and H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, President of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, as well as blessings and sermon by venerable monks from Thailand and Sri Lanka, and statements by representatives of many Member States to the United Nations. Also attended the commemoration are venerable monks from different Buddhist communities from several countries.
